SAFETY FIRST AT REED

This year, every Reed Elementary student met a childhood milestone by learning water safety fundamentals and getting properly fitted for a lifejacket.

Reed became the first school in Washington to complete the water safety curriculum of the Washington State Parks & Recreation Commission for Boat & Water Safety. For Reed Principal Abby Sloan, this is an issue that is close to her heart. Knowing the risks water can bring to children, she will be asking other schools in Tacoma to adopt this curriculum and advocates that it will become mandatory across the state.

The water safety curriculum includes three lessons that total 35-minutes. Students receive a safety plan for home, reflective backpack tag and a certificate.

Great initiative Reed Elementary! Stay safe and enjoy your summer fun in the sun, everyone!
